A friend of mine had his car (2003 Park Avenue Ultra) overheat pretty catastrophically the other day. Today we took a look. Started by filling it up with water and the problem was immediately apparent.
What I really love about Kinja is if you crop the image it strips the rights information out because fuck you.
Boop.
Apparently this is a common problem on the GM 3.8L V6. So common, in fact, that the local parts shop had upgraded replacements in stock. Worryingly the replacement kit comes with two, but I sure can’t find a second one...
Hopefully no permanent damage to the engine and also hoping for an easy repair...
UPDATE - 12AM Kinja Standard Time
Fix wasn’t as straightforward as hoped, but was OK. Turns out the two elbows (found the 2nd 0ne) run through the alternator bracket for... reasons? I can think of several better ways to do this but I’m sure this was cheaper. Either way, the alternator and belts had to come off to get the bracket and old elbows out. Luckily that was pretty trouble free coming out, and a little bit of lube got them back in pretty easy too.
I bought a little table and I like it.
“While we were in there” we went ahead and replaced the absolutly DESTROYED supercharger idler pulley that had grenaded itself years ago but wasn’t a priority to fix.
No I have no idea where the rest of it is. This is all that was left!
Fired the car up, bled the system, and we seem to be in good shape!
Tomorrow we’ll drain and refill with coolant.

there will be no damage
One piece of advice: Don’t use the O-rings that come with the new metal elbows! Replace them with OEM O-rings
I also found this video regarding the 2 elbows:

That looks like it would’ve been a spectacular failure to capture with a well-placed go pro.

Gotta love plastics in the cooling system! Don’t get me wrong, plastic can perform admirably but something tells me ‘00 GM wasn’t killing it in this department.
Did it run long after this failure? What temps were seen on the gauge (is there a real gauge?) before shutdown?

Hell the generation of Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Yukon that ran until 2018 has a huge problem with coolant lines going bad. Yet to be seen if the new ones still have it, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Like half of the trucks in the service center at the dealer I worked at was for it.

Good job GM, nobody wants a reliable coolant system!

Who TF designs a cooling system that uses the tensioner as part of the piping?!

To be fair, the 5.3 and 6.2 can actually run without coolant for a FAR longer time period than should be expected.
GM small blocks: good (unless they have cylinder deactivation)
Everything e lse: meh

Was there any semblance of a thought process? I’d love to know what they were thinking.

I did so many of these back in the day! Easy money for the shop, cheap and easy fix for the client. The video linked in the comments is pretty good too.

Uhh... probably a while. He was in a construction zone so he just had to roll with it. Apparently it shut itself off right after he parked. He’d indicated he saw at least 220F, but won’t tell me the exact number because I would “freak out” haha. Car was a little grumpy on restart but sounds OK now. :fingers crossed:

Yeah it wasn’t bad. Good access and reasonably straight forward.

Those supercharged Park Avenues are great cars. Great engines too. They can take lots of abuse.

That’s still better than...
Sometime I plan to replace the starter on my Audi. This after step 1 through step 598 of gaining access to the starter :
